Wales Witnesses Thrilling Dragon Series: Young Sailors Showcase Skills at Gresford Sailing Club

Published: 29 Apr 2026
Gresford Sailing Club recently hosted a thrilling event as part of the 2026 Dragon Series, showcasing up-and-coming sailing talent from all around North Wales.

Call it adventure. Call it a test of skill. Call it perseverance. The recently hosted Dragon Series at Gresford Sailing Club is all about setting sail towards the unknown horizon and letting young sailors go against the wind. The first North Wales event of the 2026 Dragon Series saw sailor cadets from across the region demonstrate their hard-earned sailing prowess. The sailing conditions were challenging, yet invigorating, with notable shifts and pressure changes in a 6-12 knot south-easterly breeze. It was a day teeming with action, filled with close quarters racing and heart-throbbing moments. This is sailing at its finest!

What’s more titillating is the close rivalry and camaraderie exhibited. Visiting Optimist sailor, Fletcher Sheehy, won the Silver Fleet while the podium saw exciting finishes from Sammy Udal-Bell and local Nesta Wood-Wilson. The ten-strong training fleet’s overall results were extremely close-knit with Harry Mitchell, a Leigh & Lowton SC sailor, triumphing by merely a point.

James Eastbury, the event organiser and a Gresford SC member, expressed his pride over the successful organization of the Dragon Series event. He voiced gratitude towards visiting juniors, parents, and club members on behalf of Gresford Sailing Club. A community club run by volunteers, Gresford SC shares a long history with the Dragon Series and is growing its junior fleet size consistently. The club looks forward to continuing to promote sailing and hosting more events later this year.

Rest assured, the young sailors at the club are eager to continue training and improving – eager to get back on the water and compete in the forthcoming North Wales event in the Dragon Series.
