From Lake District to the High Seas: Teenager turns Parking Lot Epiphany into World Sailing Race Experience
William Wrigley, 19 years, from St Bees in Lake District, was an ordinary teenager with a big-moment dream. Now, he’s fast-tracked his way from novice to ocean racer as he preps to sail from Seattle, all the way to the UK, in the final legs of the famed Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
This race is no ordinary feat. It stands as the only event of its kind, taking people of different walks of life and transforming them into competitive ocean racers, no matter their sailing credentials. Led by experienced skippers and a competent first mate, the crews sailing 70ft purpose-built yachts around the world follow a route broken down into eight legs. Engaging as a full team or partial crew members, participants dive into an adventure that’s nothing short of extraordinary.
Before setting sail, all race participants are required to complete four levels of comprehensive training, run by expert instructors from the race’s headquarters in Portsmouth, UK. This intensive training equips crew members with the skills needed to weather any sea conditions, ranging from tranquillity to storm-like conditions. And it’s not only the sailing part; this drill educates the participants about everything from on-board living to dealing with unlikely challenges like large-scale catering.
This gap year sailing adventure definitely proved a marked learning curve for William who, despite being far away from home and dealing with minute details, embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and was ready to embrace the rushing waves and exciting winds that came his way.
