An Unforgettable Event: Wanderer Scottish Championship at the Cramond Boat Club Summer Dinghy Regatta
Anticipation fills the air on the weekend of 13th-14th June, as the vibrant Cramond Boat Club prepares for an epic sailing event. Incorporating the Scottish Open Wanderer Championship, the Summer Dinghy Regatta is poised to be a spectacle of strategy, skill, and raw power against the unpredictable moods of the sea.
Set along the west coast of Edinburgh, the sailors prepare for the event despite the unwillingness of the weather gods to co-operate. Saturday brings gusts of up to 35 knots, effectively prohibiting any sailing for the day. As discouraged yet undeterred sailors prepare for Sunday, the wind relents, leaving the seas calm and undisturbed. Gathering their hopes, the boats drift slowly towards the starting area off the Dalmeny coast.
The wind, in an almost playful flirtation, starts to build from the east. The start sequence begins followed by a rapid re-lay of the course. The Wanderers set off first. Local helm Leonie Griffin and crew Ian Urquhart take an early lead, masterfully taking advantage of the light winds and maintain this lead till the race’s end. However, last year’s Champions, Scott Livingstone and Claire France, from the Upper Forth Boat Club, were not far behind.
As the races progress, the wind slowly increases. This played into Scott and Claire’s hands, allowing them to leverage their past experience and deliver a storming performance. With the wind on their side, they take a well-deserved victory in the third race, reminding all of their championship pedigree. Subsequent races see a neck and neck showdown with other boats, but the pair hold on. By the time the fifth race commences, Scott and Claire find their groove, claiming their third win in a row - an inspiring tribute to tenacity, strategic skills, and unquenchable love of the sea.
