Sailing enthusiasts were treated to a spectacle at Plym Yacht Club's Dart Sails & Covers Friday Series 1, marked by unpredictability, diversity and camaraderie.

If there is one place that keeps the heart of sailing beating with youthful enthusiasm, it is undoubtedly the Plym Yacht Club. Hosting the much-anticipated Dart Sails and Covers Friday Series 1, it thrust a diverse range of vessels into the limelight, from a Squib to a Corby 35. Amid an assortment of courses, every Friday evening was steeped in anticipation and thrill for each participant.

In an unpredictable British summer, the series managed to dodge the unseasonal weather for the most part, losing only one race to the whims of the wind. This unexpected pause offered the astonishing sight of the iconic Waverly paddle steamer sailing into Plymouth Sound.

In the YCT fleet, John Lewis’s Squib ‘Bootneck’ led the rest, claiming continuous victories. The rest of the pack trailed closely behind, resulting in a gripping battle for the podium in each race.

For the IRC fleet, highlights included Mark Lewers’ ‘Dangerous When Wet’ leading solo for substantial portions of race 6, and memorable scenes of ‘Badabing’s’ bowman peering from the top of the mast.

After a day’s sailing, Plym Yacht Club welcomed all to share tales of their oceanic adventures over sailing supper and beer. As Series 2 looms on the horizon, the infectious enthusiasm promises a bigger, more vibrant spectacle, with additions like a Cork 1720 and another Laser 28 set to join the ranks. The inclusive and jubilant spirit of Plym Yacht Club ensures a bright future for the sport, filled with challenge, diversity and delightful camaraderie.
