Against formidable competition, the 'Where's Lazlo?' team reigns supreme on the water, scooping the 2026 Optimist UK Team Racing Championship title.

It was a spectacular weekend on the serene waters of Rutland Sailing Club as youthful energy, tactical prowess and seafaring acumen converged on the stage of the Optimist UK Team Racing Championship 2026.

Despite the repellent drizzle that greeted the sailors at the start of the weekend, the bountiful warmth and exhilaration of competition took center stage as 24 ambitious young sailors lined up in anticipation on the glittering expanse of the lake. With a crisp 15 knots of wind, the stage was set for a thrilling contest.

Highly competitive rounds of races were orchestrated by the adept command of Brenda Davies and the hard work of her skilled race committee, culminating in a total of 60 high-stakes races over the two-day event.

In a day full of excitement and anticipation, the semi-final drew to a close with both ‘Where’s Lazlo?’ and ‘A2RT’ displaying superior tactics and skill, each winning 2-0, and advancing to the finals against each other.

The climax of the event was a tooth-and-nail fight between ‘Where’s Lazlo?’ and ‘A2RT’. While ‘A2RT’ secured the first win, ‘Where’s Lazlo?’ quickly regained footing, dashing through the finish line victoriously in the ensuing two races.

Acknowledging the spirit and tenacity of all participants, event organizer Stuart Hudson presented several special awards: ‘Mr Dizzy’ to Max Ellis-Asquith, ‘Never Give Up in Face of Adversity’ to Theo Fox, ‘Resilience Award’ to Cara Lynch and the ‘Enthusiasm award’ to Evie Rogerson.

In a resounding finale, after 70 pulse-racing rounds, ‘Where’s Lazlo?’ was crowned the UK National Team Racing Champions at the ceremony. The team demonstrated not just exceptional boat speed, but also a superlative understanding of team racing dynamics which played a part in their astounding victory. Ahead lies even greater glory, as they set their sights on the World Championships in Tangiers where we, along with the entire sailing community, wish them the very best of luck.
