High Adrenaline Snipe Open Meeting at Stone Sailing Club: Challenges and Triumphs
As gusty winds ruled the roost, 16 spirited Snipe sailboats graced the waters of Stone Sailing Club in Essex for the annual Snipe Open meeting. The event promised an intense weekend filled with tension, competition, and a collective hunger for victory. The participants included sailors from the junior team destined for the Junior Worlds, adding an extra competitive edge to the proceedings.
Brothers Harry and George Burgess, despite being novices in senior Snipe race events, showcased their sailing prowess. They raced alongside the team of Adam Aziz and George Gillespie, who were making their debut. The duo soaked up wisdom from seasoned professionals - Adam, tutored by 2018 National Champion Mark Antonelli and George who partnered with current National Champion Yohei Koso. The event provided invaluable experience for the upcoming championships.
As the morning sun rose, it was obscured by heavy rain and gusts of wind. After much internal debate on predicted weather conditions confirming gusts of over 35 knots, the fleet nevertheless set sail on the triangular course. On-shore spectators saw manageable conditions, yet the deceptive offshore wind and receding tide told a different story.
On the water, it was a different game altogether. The breeze carried unpredictability, sharp shifts, and new challenges for the sailors. In the wake of the unsparing forecast, some boats succumbed, withdrawing before the race could begin. The others gallantly embarked, allowing ample space for their companions on the starting line.
As the race progressed, Adam and Mark were leading the frontier until a technical glitch with a broken tiller extension led to their brief exit from the race. Richard Marshall and Ewan Harris then took the fore, only to have their pole snap, allowing for a tactical turnover where Yohei and George found their way in the lead. They clung to their advantage, taking home the coveted win after a shortened race in the rough conditions.
