Arrival by Sea
Use the North Ship Channel and tell Portland Harbour Radio on Ch 74 you are entering; the East Ship Channel is for commercial traffic unless cleared by the Harbour Master, and the South Ship Channel is obstructed. Enter the marina through the north side of its breakwater — not the shallow southern gap — then call Ch 80. Visitors turn to port inside the entrance. Pre-booking is recommended in peak season. Check with the marina before arrival.
Portland Harbour & Anchoring
Portland Harbour is a busy mixed-use port: cruise ships and tankers share it with yachts, dinghies, divers and kitesurfers. Of its three entrances, the North Ship Channel is for leisure traffic and the East Ship Channel is the main commercial entrance; when three vertical lights show there, a large commercial vessel is transiting and has right of way. Anchoring is prohibited in the Castle Cove seagrass area off Torpedo Pier. Read the Port’s current Notices in Force (watersports zones, foiling, diving) before choosing a spot, and ask the Port’s leisure team if unsure.
Ashore
Weymouth is a short hop away; Portland itself offers coast walks and the Isle’s heights.
