Langstone Harbour

A wide, shallow, tide-ruled harbour between Portsmouth and Hayling Island — big skies, a fierce entrance and room to drop out of the Solent crowds.

Welcome to Langstone Harbour

Langstone Harbour sits between Portsea Island and Hayling Island, the quieter neighbour to Portsmouth on one side and Chichester on the other. Much of it dries to mud and saltmarsh at low water, and the narrow entrance carries strong streams, so it rewards skippers who plan around the tide.

Setting & Character

Inside the entrance the harbour opens into broad, shallow water ringed by nature reserves and islands, with the Eastney shore to the west and Hayling to the east. It is a place for bird-watchers, dinghy sailors and yachts happy on a buoy rather than a pontoon.

Arrival by Sea

The Harbour Board says there is deep water at the entrance at all states of the tide, but shoals either side of the entrance channel extend well out into the Solent and the ebb and flow at the entrance are strong. Call Langstone Harbour Radio on Ch 68 (low power) before arrival. The moorings on the west side of the Run belong to the Eastney Cruising Association and are not for visitors. Check with the harbour office / marina before arrival.

Visitor Moorings

The Harbour Board keeps white visitor buoys immediately north of the Mulberry Harbour caisson, with alternatives in Sinah Lake, for vessels up to 12 m (larger by prior arrangement). Contact the Harbour Office before arrival and staff will allocate a suitable buoy, or direct you elsewhere if they are full. Short-term mooring rentals are offered for longer stays. You will need a tender to get ashore, and the Board advises not leaving a boat unattended without a full appraisal of weather and tide.

Southsea Marina

For a marina berth, Southsea Marina lies in Eastney Lake behind an automatic cill gate, open from 3 hours before to 3 hours after high water. The Harbour Board says vessels drawing over 1.2 m should take special care in the marina channel at low water, and the channel speed limit is 5 knots. Check with the marina before arrival, and see our Southsea Marina guide.

Fuel & Services

The Harbour Board lists fuel, water and waste reception at the Hayling pontoon and at Southsea Marina.
