History

SailGP was founded by Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts and launched as a global championship for identical F50 foiling catamarans. The circuit’s first season began in 2019 in Sydney, with national teams racing a short, broadcast-friendly stadium format in city venues around the world.

Unlike traditional offshore handicaps, SailGP levels the boats: every team races the same foiling F50 platform, so ranking turns on crew work, strategy and consistency across a season of events. Season champions are decided at a Rolex SailGP Championship Grand Final among the top teams on the season leaderboard.

Australia SailGP Team, steered by Tom Slingsby, dominated the early seasons with a three-peat through Season 3. Spain SailGP Team took the Season 4 title. In 2025, Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team won the Rolex SailGP Championship in Abu Dhabi. Venue lists evolve by season; the 2027 calendar published by SailGP runs from Hong Kong in January through to a late-season finale, with Portsmouth hosting the UK event in July.
