Gusty Decisions and Patient Sailing Exemplified at the ILCA Open Meeting in Bough Beech

Bough Beech Sailing Club served as an arena for grasp of wind and wits at the annual ILCA open event, unraveling an exciting sailing encounter.

The annual ILCA open event at Bough Beech Sailing Club unfolded a saga of strategic sailing amid erratic wind conditions. On May 30, as the forecast promised, a sunny day offered the canvas for 21 eager sailors to unleash their skills and patience. Adding a tinge of unpredictability, the wind seemed to be playing its own metaphoric game of hide and seek.

The fleet consisted of 15 ILCA 7s and six ILCA 6s. Richard Southern along with his race team expected the wind to force a 180-degree shift during the day and, in response, came up with an uncomplicated windward leeward trajectory without any spreader for the sailing venture.

The subsequent segment of the race saw Joe Warwicker and Charlie Weatheritt steal the show. Winds had dropped even more when their competition began, requiring a metamorphosis in strategies. With their vessels crawling down what transformed from a beat to a broad reach, the sailors made calculative moves to outwit each other. What started as a dubious roll tacks, unfolded a tight race, ending with Charlie trumping over Joe.

There was a mutual consensus to take a breather hoping for a wind refill, rather than rushing for a second race before lunch. As the second race post lunch commenced, with some participants dropping, patience met strategy again. David Goddard and Robert held the lead in the 7s, while Joe and Charlie had a rematch in the 6s. The day was a blend of strategic decisions, dubious tacks and resilient perseverance, ending with Charlie the victorious one and Tessa taking a well-merited third place.
