Epic Sail Racing Unfolds Amidst Sunshine and Breeze at Salcombe Yacht Club's Stones Boatyard Yawl & ILCA Open
Unfurling in the idyllic setting of Salcombe Ria during a glorious Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend, the Stones Boatyard Yawl & ILCA Open at Salcombe Yacht Club showcased engaging sail racing action. Twenty Salcombe Yawls formed the Red fleet, bringing intense competition to the crystalline waters, far from the mainland’s scorching 30-degree heat, the event unfolded amidst a tranquil climate in its mid-twenties, complemented by a satisfying breeze.
Over three days, the competitors heralded in four thrilling races. Enthusiasm mirrored the sparkling sunrays on the water as the contestants eagerly launched their boats for Race 1, leading to a general recall and subsequent relegation to the end of the start sequence. A course navigated the racers to Blackstone, staged a long run and a subsequent broad reach to Gerston, bringing an exciting spectacle for maritime enthusiasts.
Spectacular manoeuvres captured spectators’ fascination as the fleet displayed outstanding skills, claiming redress, taking chances and deciding the best routes amidst an array of boats. The leaders’ strategy, especially Hendersons’ daring high route, revealed a masterclass in navigation and sailing tactics.
The race concluded with an exciting crescendo, transforming Gerston into a riot of sail, foam, and spirited competition, as racers sped to finish the line.
