Emerging talents in sailing experience an exciting mixture of fervent competition and camaraderie at the final session of the Merlin Rocket youth training program.

Commencing at a young age, many sailors sail single-handed dinghies, gradually moving up through different fleets. Yet there is something incredibly enticing about stepping in a Merlin Rocket for the first time. It’s enough to completely sweep off anyone’s feet. This specific difference was discovered by several young sailors in a training session held at Fisher Green Sailing Club. Unlike any other normal day of training, May 23rd was different. It was the culmination of a series of training sessions leading up to the final Merlin Rocket youth program session. During this day, eight talented sailors took over Fishers Green Sailing Club, dividing into four teams and battling the light winds in an all-out sailing extravaganza. With the bank holiday sun beating down on them, our young sailors threw themselves into the spirit of competition with gusto, each aiming to keep their sailing boat, the beloved ‘Stanley’, smoothly cruising. Guided by their brilliant coach, Courtney, they mastered popping the top batten even in the lightest of breezes. The culmination of the day was a highly-anticipated round-robin race series. The stakes were higher than ever - victory meant not just glory but the prestigious Willetts Trophy. Amidst intense competition, strategies were plotted and executed meticulously, competitors forged and renewed alliances, but most importantly, they learned the joy and thrill of being on water. The brilliance of this event lies not just in creating a platform for young sailors to showcase their skills, but in forging a strong sense of camaraderie and community amongst the sailors. As they pushed their limits, battled the wind and waves, they found not just their strengths, but also friends for life. Hence, the Merlin Rocket Youth Training and Championship was more than a sailing event, it was an experience that moulded budding sailors and instilled in them a lifelong love for sailing.
