Day 2 of the 2026 iQFOiL Open European Championships in Portimão was a day of shifting conditions, intense racing and riveting competition.

On the second day of the absorbing 2026 iQFOiL Open European Championships in Portimão, numerous athletes returned to the waters off Praia da Rocha, steadily adjusting their strategies and tactics in response to both the shifting conditions and the established competitive atmosphere of the tournament, which now had a total of 192 participants representing 42 nations.

Day 2 challenged the athletes with significantly different conditions from Day 1. The thermal breeze came in late in the afternoon, with the wind speed varying between 8 and 11 knots from around 270 degrees. The lighter, less stable air influx required racers to maintain speed while transitioning and identify the optimum pressure lanes.

Dutch Olympic bronze medallist Luuc Van Opzeeland shone in the men’s fleet, moving into the overall lead highlighted by two race victories. Italy’s U23 sailor Federico Alan Pilloni continued impressing onlookers by securing the fifth position in the overall standing after a sturdy performance that included a race win.

As the championship progresses, racers will continue to face variable conditions, testing both their sailing skills and adaptability. In this demanding six-day regatta, being able to quickly adjust to the changing environment will undoubtedly be a crucial determinant of the final victor.
