The Thrill of the Start: RS Tera South West Traveler Series Unfurls at Whitefriars Sailing Club
Embracing its traditional role, the Whitefriars SC once again welcomed the first round of the coveted RS Tera South West Traveller Series. The event, a part of the series that explores a rich tapestry of coastal and inland clubs, began its journey in the serene and sheltered waters of Whitefriars. Here, often unpredictable, shifting winds promise an enticing challenge that lures sailors from wondrous corners of the South, South-west, and Midwest with some even traversing their way from the far-reaches of Devon. With such a diverse platter of clubs represented, it was a spectacle steeped in anticipation and camaraderie from the get-go. Race officer Chris Hargreaves charted a dynamic and engaging route for the first race, opting for a figure-of-eight course. Arabella Broughton, having switched to a Pro sail at the last minute, led and held the front position throughout. A stirring episode unfolded behind her as the rest of the pack, featuring the Sport sailors, waged their own war of prowess and resilience. Kilian Snelling, despite being a stranger to Tera fleets and the away conditions, impressed with an enviable second-place finish after Amy Heyburn, a testament to his resilient spirit. But the tournament had more excitement in store. As the day progressed, the gusts morphed, necessitating course adjustments, while the fierce competition pitting Jonas Spicer and Arabella Broughton against Amy Heyburn in the Pro fleet offered an unmissable spectacle. Heyburn ultimately reigned supreme, seizing the top honour after all races. Spicer could console himself with a top finish in the Pro category, while a spirited performance in the afternoon secured Oscar Lee the third spot. A beautiful day of sailing, competition, and forging of new friendships, undoubtedly left an indelible mark on all participants. The journey continues and the waves wait eagerly for more tales from the 2026 RS Tera South West Traveller Series.
