Recent Study Underscores The Powerful Economic Footprint of Global Superyacht Sector
A groundbreaking 2022 study, conducted by Deloitte and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, reveals the significant economic impact of the superyacht sector. This industry has been marked as one of the key players in the worldwide maritime ecosystem, generating a whopping €54 billion in total economic output.
This influential study supports the new Builders Advocacy Campaign by the Superyacht Builders Association, designed to underscore the vital role that yacht builders play in supporting the economic vitality of global coastal regions. The industry translates into €22 billion in direct expenditure, generating an additional €32 billion in indirect economic activity, thereby highlighting the sector’s significant butterfly effect across the broader economy.
Yacht construction accounts for a significant portion (37%) of the industry’s total economic footprint, amounting to nearly €20 billion globally. Equally important is the refit and maintenance sector with a €5.6 billion contribution, representing one of the industry’s key growth opportunities as the global fleet continues to modernise.
However, the study also throws light on a structural imbalance within the sector: builders who bear the brunt of major investments, risks, and long-term liabilities, contrasted with the downstream sectors reaping the economic benefits.
The study underlines the operational expenditure (OPEX) of shipyards as the driving economic force in the upstream sector, with new builds accounting for 76% of the total turnover (€7.2 billion) and refurbishment contributing the remaining 24% (€2.3 billion). This points towards the need for policy frameworks and market strategies that can effectively leverage this potential to buoy economic growth in coastal regions across the globe.
In essence, the superyacht sector isn’t just about luxury and extravagance. It’s a silent economic powerhouse, influencing global markets and shaping local economic trajectories.
