About the club
Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club was founded in 1952 by Tiny Mitchell, a well-known east coast sailor and Commodore of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club at Burnham, who preferred the Solent for his 6 Metre. He bought the club's waterfront plot for £500, and local sailors built the club themselves. Mitchell was its first Commodore until his death in 1964.
Racing record
In 1953, only months after it was founded, the club ran a Round the Island race for dinghies with 180 boats. The first two boats finished within a second of each other: Ian Proctor and John Oakley in the prototype Osprey, just ahead of Claude Nethercot in the boat that became the 505. Since then the club has hosted the Flying Fifteen Worlds, the Sonar Worlds, two J24 Europeans and many national championships.
Facilities
The club has its own marina and dry-sailing facilities. Today it is home to Flying Fifteen and XOD fleets, runs RYA training, and provides race management for events including Cowes Week.
Visitors
Members of RYA-affiliated clubs, or an overseas equivalent, are welcome. Sign the Visitors Register and introduce yourself to a committee member if you can. There is limited berthing for visiting yachts.
How to join
Membership is available as Single Adult, Joint Adult, Family, Junior and Cadet, with discounted rates for those living abroad. Fees are kept low through a self-help ethos, where members help with launching, maintenance and events. Applicants need a proposer and seconder, or can meet a Flag Officer or committee member instead.
