Meet Toby Allies, The Man Spearheading Pendennis's Refit Strategy and Solidifying the UK's Position in Global Yachting
The UK’s stature in global superyacht construction is evolving. Leading the way is Pendennis, the British yard known for its refit strategy, incessant workforce investment, and international growth. Anchored by Toby Allies, the Group’s Managing Director, Pendennis is shifting gears despite a softer new-build yacht output, firmly instituting its place as a refit centre of excellence. Allies accentuates the UK’s enduring prowess in service, design, and OEM supply, with Pendennis ‘‘punching well above our weight.’’
Meriting its status through investment in people and facilities, Pendennis aims at strengthening its position in the long-term by responding to the increasing number of yachts requiring refits. It continues to churn out custom new-build projects as well, with notable recent additions including the 34.9-metre Fox (2024) and 39.4-metre Halekai (2020).
According to Allies, newer segments and the increasing demand for lifecycle modernisation for yachts built 20 to 30 years ago are contributing to the group’s growth. Moreover, despite pressure on pricing, delivery, and labour availability, Allies is confident that Pendennis’s differentiation lies in their people. He lauds the team’s proven skill on intricate, award-winning projects and the value they attach to long-term client relationships.
Investment in infrastructure remains a central theme. Allies cites recent developments such as a digital manufacturing centre that integrates 3D scanning and Computer Numerical Control (CNC), enabling them to handle up to 12 projects yearly in Falmouth.
In an increasingly competitive global refit market, the efforts of the Pendennis Group show how a focus on refit strategy, employee development, and facility advancement can navigate industry shifts and firmly establish the UK’s competitive position in the world yacht domain.
