Laserfest 2025 Shines at Whitstable Yacht Club, Attracting a Stellar Fleet of 40 Laser/ILCA Sailboats
The windy shores of Whitstable Yacht Club reverberated with spirited competition as it hosted Laserfest 2025, a celebration of Laser/ILCA racing. With an impressive line-up of 40 boats, the event not only boosted the sailing participation of Whitstable’s local sailors, but also wooed entries from clubs as far-flung as Yorkshire.
The opening day saw an east-blowing F3 to F4/5 wind, accompanied by clear skies. These conditions were a boon for the race management team, steered by PRO Tom Bruton, who launched five consecutive sprint races of 20-30 minutes duration each. Competitors returned in time to catch the Wimbledon women’s final.
Despite this, the series remained anything but predictable. Race four saw a bold move from Hythe sailor, Sebastian Robb, who daringly crossed the fleet on port, to everyone’s astonishment. Though Finlay once more claimed victory, Robb held his own, securing a strong second place.
The day rounded off with the fifth race that felt like a tireless battle against a two-lap course and the day’s strongest winds. Yet again, Finlay seized the win, creating a solid string of victories.
Beyond the competition, Laserfest lived up to its event tagline of ‘Racing, Music, and Beer’. Sailors spent Saturday evening unwinding, indulging in Paella, beer, and lively music performed by the club band, The Dead Pelicans.
Sunday dawned more placid, however, with sore heads, light wind, and cloudy skies. Despite this, the excitement was still palpable as the next five back-to-back races were lined up, primed to decide the ultimate victor of Laserfest 2025.
