Poland Takes Centre Stage: The Transformation of Eastern Europe's Maritime Industry

Published: 04 Jan 2026
Breaking from its industrial past, Poland is becoming a prominent player in the luxury yacht construction industry.

Poland’s maritime heritage extends over a millennium, with its rich shipbuilding past punctuated by the iconic Gdańsk Shipyard and the towering crane on the banks of the Motława River. However, a transformation is superficially noticeable in this Eastern European nation. The dockyards, previously bustling with industrial activity, are now homes to sleek superyacht hulls and composite catamarans, signifying Poland’s progress beyond its post-war industrial recovery. The country, once recognized mainly for its commercial vessels and industrial shipyards, is now steadily emerging on the European yacht construction map. The level of activity in the Tri-city region, covering Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Ostróda, suggests a palpable shift towards the high-end sailing and motor yacht market. A symbol of this evolution is Sunreef Yachts, a firm that encapsulates Polish ambition in the field of luxury yachting. Predominantly concentrating on large catamarans, Sunreef’s creative solutions and investment in innovation have helped it carve a niche for itself in the global yachting industry. Its journey reveals the challenges faced when persuading customers to invest in a Polish-built luxury product. However, two decades later, Sunreef stands as a beacon of Polish excellence, competing confidently within the international market. The company recently used the Monaco Yacht Show to unveil a concept for a 65-meter Explorer catamaran, emphasizing Poland’s ambition to position itself in a segment where size, range, and capacity are pivotal. Meanwhile, another Polish player, Conrad Shipyard, has built its reputation on crafting one-off projects for international clientele. The firm, set up in 2003 as a specialist division, is currently working on several yachts exceeding 30 meters. The launch of ACE in 2022 marked a turnaround, paving the way for additional investment for larger projects. It is an indication that Polish yards can not only compete but also excel in areas where specialised skills matter as much as scale. A key advantage for Poland lies in its technical universities, whose valuable collaborations with local employers ensure a steady supply of specialized labor. This synergy between academia and industry is a significant factor propelling Poland’s stride towards the forefront of European yacht building. The maritime transformation of this Eastern European nation offers an optimistic prospect for the future of the luxury yacht construction industry.
