Pioneer initiative by RYA seeks to redefine UK sailing future through community-driven Landmark Survey

In efforts to steer UK's sailing community towards a brighter future, RYA has launched a landmark survey initiative aimed at gathering insights from the community.

Sailing and boating in the UK have met their watershed moment. Participation has been waning, making it imperative for industry stakeholders to coalesce towards revitalizing this cherished tradition. Taking up this monumental task, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the National Governing Body for the UK’s sailing and boating community, has embarked on a landmark initiative — the Reflections on Water Survey.

Advertised as the RYA’s largest open study to date, the survey is designed to encapsulate the most holistic picture of life on the water in the UK. From the grassroots level to professional pathways, it aims at comprehending aspects that are functioning optimally, facets that are teetering, and areas most in need of change.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor, a club member, a volunteer, or a marine industry professional, your experiences and insights will contribute towards shaping the future of sailing in the UK. It will enable RYA to support the sport better, strengthen career pathways across the maritime sector, and serve as a beacon, guiding the way towards open and welcoming waters for all pastime enthusiasts and professionals.

The Reflections on Water Survey, which will run until December 2021, will help shape future initiatives, opportunities, and investment. It’s a testament to RYA’s belief that sailing and boating is a thread in the rich tapestry of the UK’s national identity and a hopeful call-to-arms for a united maritime future.

Embedded in the midst of RYA’s Reflections on Water campaign, the survey becomes the conduit for connecting nationwide voices to drive meaningful change. Steering towards a more accessible, inclusive, and open sailing and boating culture, it stands as testimony to RYA’s steadfast long-term commitment to the maritime community.

Tying up for the future, RS Sailing, an innovative small-sailing craft designer, has been announced as the official partner of the RYA’s Connected series of events, webinars, and activities for 2025-2026. The partnership aims to enhance and empower leaders across the RYA’s extensive affiliate network, including sailing clubs, class associations, and training centres. Demonstrating strong faith in partnership and progress, these collaborative efforts envision a bright future for sailing in the UK.
