Lürssen's 114.2-metre superyacht, Project Cosmos, known for its revolutionary fuel-cell technology, has now started its sea trials near Kiel, Germany.

The pioneering 114.2-metre Lürssen superyacht, Project Cosmos, has set sail for its sea trials near Kiel, Germany. With its cutting-edge fuel-cell technology, it stands as one of the first yachts in the world to venture into this technological frontier. The vessel was last spotted at her launch in August, which revealed exciting details about her innovative fuel-cell capabilities, unique structure, and captivating design.

At the request of the owner, Lürssen installed two 500kW methanol fuel cells into Project Cosmos. This technological leap allows the superyacht to cruise at seven knots for up to 1,000 nautical miles. Described as a ’technologically challenging procedure,’ it has set a new bar in sustainable luxury yachting. Despite its innovative fuel-cell technology, Project Cosmos still includes the traditional diesel generators, engines, and fuel storage facilities often found on superyachts.

The glass theme runs throughout the six-deck superyacht, particularly on the cabin deck, where a continuous band encases the entire upper level, offering uninterrupted views. A glass-encased observation lounge located on the bow, beneath the helipad, proves to be a major highlight, along with an aft deck swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, comfortable seating, and a dry dock.

Project Cosmos also comes equipped with Ice Class 1D certification, allowing its passage through light ice conditions, opening her to globe-trotting opportunities across all seven continents and five major oceans.

Despite the impressive stature, Project Cosmos isn’t the largest yacht currently under construction at Lürssen - but it’s undoubtedly one of the most innovative. As luxury yachting enters a new, sustainable era, both enthusiasts and industry pioneers watch Projects like Cosmos with vested interest, setting sail towards uncharted waters of innovation and luxury.
