German Shipyard Lürssen Unveils the Groundbreaking Superyacht Cosmos, Revolutionizing the Yachting World with Novel Fuel-Cell Technology
The prestigious German shipyard, Lürssen, has introduced a triumph of marine engineering in the form of the 114.2-metre Cosmos. This superyacht uniquely features methanol fuel-cell technology, marking a ’technologically challenging procedure’ that makes Cosmos a fore-runner in the evolution of yachting. The vessel possesses two 500kW methanol fuel cells, with the capacity to cruise up to seven knots for a range of 1,000 nautical miles, a feature requested by the owner. However, to ensure a balance between innovation and practicality, the yacht still includes all traditional combustion equipment like the diesel generators, engines, and tanks.
Lürssen developed a custom solution to bend large sections of thick glass, providing 360-degree panoramic vistas. The unique yachting experience is further enhanced by the upper deck, encased by a continuous band of glass for unhindered views. An observation lounge and an open balcony with a glass balustrade lay ahead in the bow beneath the helipad and aft, respectively. Another prime feature is the aft deck swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, flanked by plush seating and connected to a dry dock via a sledge to launch and retrieve the yacht’s major supporting tender.
The Cosmos has been designed for extensive remote cruising. Its Ice Class 1D certification enables it to operate in ’light ice’ conditions without compromising the safety and comfort of those onboard. This certification makes it feasible for Cosmos to explore all five of the major oceans and even venture into the seven continents. Although Cosmos is one of the largest yachts currently under construction, it is still overshadowed by another wonder from Lürssen, the 134.2-metre Project Deep Blue. With the delivery of Cosmos expected in 2026, the yachting world keenly waits to witness how this marvel will redefine seafaring.
