Living the Dream Without Breaking the Bank: The Iconic 80ft Motor Yacht Blue Legend
The fascinating journey of Paul Markland spans from simple beginnings near the tidal creeks of South Devon coast, with a deep connection to the sea that felt more like a calling than an interest. His early adventures with a battered Enterprise dinghy set the stage for an enduring romance with yachting. Paul’s experience expanded with an old Fletcher speedboat, which introduced him to the thrill of waterskiing and sailing at high speeds.
His failed attempts to secure a place in higher education propelled him towards a career in the merchant navy. With hard work and perseverance, Paul’s professional journey took him to the farthest corners of the earth, from crewing supertankers to captaining a dive support vessel and managing shipping projects in foreign lands. He finally returned to the UK to helm a shipping company.
The Windy Khamsin was such a triumph that they soon swapped it for a larger model, the Windy 44 Chinook, enabling them to explore even further afield. Even so, none of their past escapades could have prepared Paul for the next chapter in his yachting journey. A lucky find led to the purchase of Blue Legend, the largest Nelson ever built.
Blue Legend, originally commissioned in 1994 and extended from 68ft to 80ft in 2006, was languishing in a shed in Porto Ercole. Even on paper, Blue Legend was a beauty, and was acquired by Paul for a price much lower than its original asking price of €1.1 million. This extraordinary encounter led to four years of memorable adventures with the iconic yacht. Paul’s exceptional journey is a testament to the power of passion, vision, and a deep love for the sea.
