Record-breaking offshore classics set to race in IRC Zero

Rolex Fastnet Race Christophe Bachmann’s crew will be bringing Adrien to the Fastnet. This is the boat that, back in 2004, VDH set the record for the fastest solo westabout circumnavigation of the world with a time of 122 days 14 hours 3 minutes 49 seconds. Adrien is a 26m long Gilles Vaton-designed monohull built in aluminium and her rugged construction should give Bachmann’s crew reassurance if we see yet another stormy start to the Fastnet of the kind that hit the fleet in 2021 and 2023.

The principal fight this year will be between the two evenly matched former Rolex Sydney Hobart 100ft line honours rivals Black Jack 100 of Ramon Vos and Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag. Black Jack 100 was originally launched in 2005 as Neville Crichton’s Alfa Romeo II, but as Igor Simčič’s Esimit Europa II won Rolex Fastnet Race line honours in 2013. SHK Scallywag was formerly Ragamuffin 100, launched in 2015, the last offshore yacht to be campaigned by the late great Australian Syd Fischer, the overall Fastnet Race winner back in 1971.

Record-sized fleet

Less than two months now remain until the start of the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race, this year coinciding with the Royal Ocean Racing Club's centenary. Another huge fleet has entered. While 2023’s 50th edition of the event, that back in 1925 caused the RORC to be founded, saw a record 430 boats set sail, the 2025 entry list indicates that even this figure may be exceeded when the race starts from Cowes on 26 July, bound for Cherbourg-en-Cotentin via the famous Fastnet Rock off southwest Ireland.
