Anticipation Builds as Two-Handed Powerhouses Rejoin the Fray at Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race
The 40th edition of the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race is bracing for an enthralling contest. Pre-eminent among the entrants are the celebrated two-handers, including the 2023 champion and runner-up, poised to rival again for the coveted trophy. Their ambition? Mastery of the 226 nautical mile classic.
Australia’s perhaps most acclaimed two-hander, Rupert Henry, is set to resume his winning ways aboard his Lombard 34, Mistral, co-commanding with Greg O’Shea. This duo’s triumph in 2023 was echoed by their commendable performance in the Rolex Sydney Hobart in the same year, placing sixth overall, succumbing only to fully-crewed yachts considerably larger than their own - a testament to their prowess and determination.
In preparation, Henry has been racing an ILCA 7 and plans to participate in the ILCA Masters Worlds in Greece come June. With his eyes set on the Route du Rhum, sailing single-handed events in Europe is on his itinerary.
Recalling their 2023 encounter, Henry shared their close victory over Disko Trooper Contender Sailcloth in largely unpredictable light conditions. Jules Hall, owner of the J/99 and co-skipper of Jan Scholten, who paralleled Mistral throughout the remarkable race and triumphed in the ORC division, seeks a rematch with Mistral this year with his new partner, Alex Knight.
As the heavyweights prepare to sail once again, anticipation builds for an enthralling face-off in the high seas.
