The first North Wales event of the 2026 Dragon Series saw young sailors display superior skills amid fierce competition and fluctuating weather conditions.

Gresford Sailing Club had the privilege of hosting the first North Wales event of the 2026 Dragon Series. An exciting day of competition ensued, with sailors from across the region showcasing their skills in challenging conditions. The weather served up unforeseen shifts and pressure changes, resulting in thrilling races in a 6-12 knot South Easterly breeze.

An action-packed schedule, replete with six handicap races, generated scintillating competition across all levels. The silver fleet accommodated the experienced sailors, while a coach-supported training fleet nurtured the less seasoned. The races presented an exciting theatre of action, with many local Gresford SC Juniors partaking in their first racing experiences in the weeks leading up to the event.

Among the winners, visiting Optimist sailor Fletcher Sheehy led the Silver Fleet, with close competition in the chasing pack. In the ten-strong Training Fleet, Harry Mitchell edged victory by a single point.
