Daring Duos Vie for Victory in the September Sun: Welstead Yawl Open

Published: 02 Oct 2025
In a spectacular fleet of 18 yawls, competitive teams contested in the Welstead September Open, under favourable warm, sunny conditions and light winds.

The Welstead September Yawl Open, hosted on beautiful warm, sunny days under light N/NE winds, was a marvel to witness. Against all odds, after weeks of frustrating windy conditions and cancelled races, it played out in the most benign conditions, allowing the sailors to shine.

A record 18 blue fleet yawls anchored to kick start the competition. Competitiveness rippled through the lines as there was no apparent favourite - any of the 6-8 teams, each more skilled than the last, could snatch up the trophy.

Race one set in motion a heated duel. With Simon/Ross temporarily leading, the baton of supremacy switched hands multiple times among the front-runners. Despite the fierce tacks, ‘The Commodores Barge’ took hold of the reigns, as Mark/Phil emerged as runner-ups while Rob/Robin and Mike/Nicky bagged the third and fourth positions, with Simon completing the top five.

The fourth race kicked off with a similar pattern, but this time some teams were caught off guard by the building tide. However, lines of breeze opened up opportunities for Mark/Phil and comeback team James/Chubby.

In the end, friendly rivalry, fair sportsmanship, and exquisite manoeuvres made the Welstead September Yawl Open an event to remember. Anchors up for a round of beer and curry!
