Youthful Prodigies Set Sail at the 17th Eastern Seaboard Regatta in Thailand
The 17th Eastern Seaboard Youth Regatta undoubtedly kicked off the sailing season in spectacular fashion at the prestigious Royal Varuna Yacht Club. The club once again proved a perfect venue for showcasing international competition, delivering steady winds and open waters that welcomed 140 boats from 11 countries to compete in this youthful sailing rendezvous. Thrilling action started on day one with winds building up 12-17 knots, presenting an exciting challenge across all classes. The Optimist fleet garnered significant attention, with Thai and Australian sailors vying for top honors while engaging in a scintillating head-to-head. Thailand’s sailors leveraged their local knowledge to dominate both the ILCA 4 and 6 fleets, and an intense competition unfolded in the 420 classes between Thai and Malaysian teams. Day two started with a calming 10-knot breeze. However, changing currents, swells, and light and tactical conditions put competitors’ skills to the test. The day ended with Thai teams leading the 420 class and Ton Rattana extending his lead over formidable Chinese rivals in the ILCA 6 fleet. Day three greeted participants with light morning rains, transitioning to a soft breeze of 7-9 knots by noon. The day unfolded strategically amid lighter wind conditions. Yet again, Thai sailors demonstrated dominance in the ILCA 4 and 6 fleets. The day concluded with setting the stage for a riveting end to the regatta, promising a showdown that will decide the eventual champions.
