Unlocking the Enigmatic Economic Influence of the New-Build Yacht Industry Through Data
Advanced data analysis has illuminated the seemingly nebulous world of the yachting industry, in particular, the new-build sector. Robert van Tol, a staunch advocate for data availability and its dynamic use, has been spearheading these analytic ventures.
Leveraging his extensive background in environmental conservation at the Water Revolution Foundation, Van Tol champions for the relevance of data in shedding light on the yachting sector’s environmental and economic impact, whilst ensuring the privacy of its clientele is safeguarded.
In an industry peppered with NDAs and critical of releasing sensitive information, data remains the key to highlighting the unique use case of yachts over commercial ships, providing regulators with quantifiable insights into the sector’s substantial contribution to the global economy.
For the new-build yacht sector alone, the economic impact was measured at a handsome 20 billion euros annually, which impressively makes up 37% of the total yachting industry’s impact. This involves 7.2 billion in direct impacts and a whopping 12.8 billion euros in indirect impacts, courtesy of the multiplier effect phenomenon.
The multiplier effect, a term that refers to the increase in final income arising from any new injection of spending, was found to be particularly substantial in the new-build sector. Each euro spent in this segment generated an additional 1.8 euros of revenue elsewhere in the global economy.
Major contributors to this impact include hull and superstructure construction, mechanical systems, and luxury interiors, which accounted for 21%, 20%, and 11% respectively. While Europe remains the epicenter of new yacht builds, the report interestingly highlighted that 135 shipyards were actively building 30-metre-plus yachts globally in 2022.
These findings serve as a testament to the scale and importance of the yacht build sector within the global economy. While data analysis in this sector is often complicated by privacy concerns and data scarcity, the knowledge unlocked by such studies is indispensable in shaping smart, informed, and effective strategies within the yachting industry.
