The anticipated Stewart Brewing 707 Edinburgh Cup proved a sensational start to the sailing season, showcasing an impressive fleet at Port Edgar Yacht Club.

The Stewart Brewing 707 Edinburgh Cup heralded the commencement of a thrilling 707 season, held on 25th April at the prominent Port Edgar Yacht Club. Boasting 16 exquisite boats at the starting line in St David’s Bay on the Forth, the event showcased the power and allure of the UK’s most active One Design Keelboat Fleet. The fleet was enriched by the addition of a novel member, Ian McCarlie, and his energetic team, who showed immense promise with their newly acquired vessel, Isbean. The arena was further heightened by the inclusion of a pair of student teams from Dundee University Sailing Club. With the series holding no discard, fostering consistency amongst the competitors was key. Despite an eager start in the preliminary race by Tsunami 2, the race win was ultimately bagged by reigning National Champions Seaword. Tsunami 2 however, bounced back in Race 2, with new helm Nick Bell leading them to victory. The event was marked by close competition and fluctuating weather conditions. A day that began with a mild 10 knot Easterly breeze, gradually morphed into champagne conditions, presenting both challenges and opportunities in the form of dense chop and a strengthening ebb tide. Races 4 and 5 clearly belonged to the ‘More T Vicar’ team, led by Ben Williamson from Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club. They navigated the choppy waters with near-perfect precision. The event concluded with ‘More T Vicar’ crowned champions, aided by their flawless and consistent performance. Close competitors included team Neville in Po and Tsunami 2. The annual sailing event, made possible by the indefatigable efforts of Port Edgar Yacht Club and their committed team of volunteers, served up high-quality racing, proving to be a befitting start to the sailing season. The Stewart Brewing 707 Edinburgh Cup was indeed a sight to behold, promising a memorable sailing season ahead.
