Navigating into a Greener Future: Rolls-Royce Tests Its First Pure Methanol Marine Engine Successfully

Published: 28 Oct 2025
In an industry-defining breakthrough, Rolls-Royce announces successful testing of the world's first exclusively methanol-fueled marine engine.

Building on its legacy of pioneering propulsion technology, Rolls-Royce has set another industry benchmark with the successful testing of their first high-speed marine engine powered solely by methanol. This groundbreaking accomplishment from the leading aero-engine manufacturer and propulsion specialist ushers in a new era of energy-efficient marine transportation.

This pioneering test took place at their research facility in Friedrichshafen, Germany and forms part of the meOHmare research project. It’s an ambitious initiative the company is diligently working on along with partners in the domain.

Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, proudly announced that this is indeed a ‘world first’. His assertion emphasized that this performance isn’t just a fleeting accomplishment, but a significant step towards revolutionizing marine propulsion systems as they venture to introduce ‘future technologies’ like methanol fuel in the market.

Methanol, a liquid alcohol, differs from traditional diesel in many ways and poses unique challenges. It requires an entirely new injection technology as it does not spontaneously ignite. Nevertheless, this success story exhibits Rolls-Royce’s ingenuity in overcoming these challenges and innovatively redesigning the combustion process, turbocharging mechanisms, controlling systems and their test bench infrastructure. The initial test exhibits a smoothly functioning engine, awaiting some minor tuning.

Recognized as one of the most promising alternative fuels for shipping, green methanol offers straightforward storage, biodegradability, significantly fewer pollutants, and the prospect of CO2-neutral operation.

Senior Vice President Denise Kurtulus asserts that the victorious test run sends a clear message to the world that green methanol is indeed the fuel of the future and they have the technology for it. In addition to this, Rolls-Royce is also developing a dual-fuel concept that enables both methanol and diesel fuel usage until green methanol becomes prevalent, making this a versatile and adaptable solution for the shipping industry.
