Reliving 2025: A Shocking Year of Maritime Perilous Events

Published: 17 Dec 2025
A year in retrospect, 2025 witnessed several heartrending boat calamities worth noting from fires to unfortunate groundings.

If history must be retold, the nautical world of 2025 had its fair share of excitement skewed towards the unfortunate spectrum. The year showcased calamitous tides featuring some harrowing incidents quite unparalleled. The entire fraternity, however, remained hopeful despite the twist of events and arose stronger in spirit for navigating forward. Among the headlines that blew the sailor hats off, a chilling marina fire in Marseilles stood out, as well as the grounding of Sanlorenzo’s flagship. Yet, nothing was more dramatic than the sinking of a newly built superyacht within moments of its virgin voyage. Indeed, these evidences narrate a tale of bravery, sorrow, and vigilance. The 24-meter superyacht from Medyılmaz Shipyard, Dolce Vento, capsized immediately post-launching owing to an alleged stabilization issue. The yacht sank to a depth of seven meters even before the celebratory champagne could dry! Swiftly following this episode was the sinking of the Tecnomar Lamborghini 63 sports yachts off Miami Beach. Too close for comfort, yet an event that shook the ethos of boating. The year saw its sharpest sting when the 41-meter superyacht Sea Lady II suffered severe damage due to a fire while docked cozily in St Tropez. Flames engulfed the boat causing it to partially sink, leaving but a haunting vision for many. Tale of woes continued when the 43-meter Custom Line motor yacht, Lady Dia ran aground near Bonifacio Marina, another incident that reaffirmed how we must never underestimate the sea’s power. Also, the 29-meter Astondoa motor yacht Da Vinci caught fire off the coast of Formentera, Spain while carrying seven souls. It was also a year when a ferocious fire demolished the 30-meter Azimut yacht, Ramonda while it was calmly anchored in Portonovi, a resort marina in Montenegro. Taking a stroll back through these episodes from 2025, it is a stark yet powerful reminder of the importance of vigilance, safety, and preparedness. The sea, after all, is a call to adventure and thrill, but one which demands respect, caution, and wisdom along the ride.
