TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Caribbean’s sailing capital is setting course for a bold new chapter. On Friday, October 31, 2025, Nanny Cay Marina — the beating heart of the BVI’s marine industry — officially broke ground on an ambitious $30–$40 million expansion project, ushering in the next era of yachting excellence in the British Virgin Islands.

The landmark ceremony, held on-site at Nanny Cay, marked the beginning of construction on a project that will transform the marina into one of the most advanced and versatile facilities in the entire Caribbean. The expansion includes 112 brand-new berths, an enormous custom-built Marine Travelift capable of handling the new generation of 60–80-foot catamarans, expanded boatyard space, and upgraded visitor amenities designed to rival the world’s finest resort marinas.

Government officials, industry leaders, and local dignitaries gathered to celebrate this milestone moment — one that signals both confidence in the BVI’s maritime future and recognition of Nanny Cay’s crucial role in it.

A Vision Anchored in Growth and Innovation

“This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to improving facilities for the BVI’s marine community and strengthening Nanny Cay’s position as the heart of Caribbean yachting,” said Cameron McColl, Chairman of Nanny Cay.

“The new travelift and additional berthing will significantly increase our capacity and allow us to better serve both local and visiting vessels, particularly the growing number of large catamarans and superyachts operating in the region. This is more than a marina project — it’s a tangible step toward securing the BVI’s place as a premier global destination for sailing and yacht services.”

The new Travelift, one of the largest in the region, will handle vessels up to 165 feet — an essential step as the Caribbean continues to see a surge in multihull and superyacht traffic.

Miles Sutherland-Pilch, Nanny Cay’s General Manager, added: “We’ve seen increasing demand from larger multihulls and monohulls. This expansion was designed to meet that need head-on. The new lift and berths will enable us to manage more vessels efficiently and safely, all while maintaining the high standard of service that sailors associate with Nanny Cay. It’s an exciting evolution — not just for us, but for the entire BVI marine sector.”

Government Backing and Economic Confidence

Among the guests at the groundbreaking were Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley, His Excellency the Governor Mr. Daniel Pruce, and Deputy Premier and Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Honourable Julian Fraser — reflecting the project’s national importance.

Premier Wheatley hailed the development as a cornerstone investment for the Virgin Islands’ future:

“We gather not only to break ground on this expansion, but to celebrate the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Virgin Islands. This marina expansion represents the first of three phases in a broader transformation of the Nanny Cay Resort and Marina — a project that will create 91 new jobs and inject up to $40 million into our economy. It’s a declaration of confidence in our people, our maritime legacy, and the BVI’s position as a global yachting hub.”

Building a Future for the Next Generation

Beyond its world-class infrastructure, the expansion carries a strong focus on community development and education. Through a new partnership with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Nanny Cay will launch a marine training hub for local youth — providing hands-on education in marine engineering, operations, and hospitality.

Dedicated spaces within the expanded complex will also support the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s youth sailing and dinghy programs, nurturing the next generation of BVI sailors and maritime professionals.

A Legacy of Yachting Excellence

For decades, Nanny Cay has stood at the heart of the Caribbean sailing scene — a haven for cruisers, racers, and liveaboards alike. It’s home to the legendary BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, now approaching its 53rd edition in 2026, which draws yachts and sailors from across the world.

From hosting regattas and refitting round-the-world racers to serving as a hub for charter fleets and bluewater cruisers, Nanny Cay’s reputation for service, innovation, and community runs deep.

“The ongoing success of Nanny Cay became evident as our existing marinas outgrew capacity,” McColl said. “This third marina is essential to meeting demand — and ensuring the BVI remains the epicentre of Caribbean yachting.”
