Historic Yacht Sea Cloud Experiences New Dawn with Lavish Rebuild
Once the world’s largest private sailing yacht, the legendary Sea Cloud is currently experiencing a renaissance. Known for her impressive history, design, and engineering, the 1931 built ship is undergoing a comprehensive refit, breathing new life into this historic vessel. Sea Cloud has a rich lineage, conceived by American businesswoman and cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, and Wall Street financier, Edward Francis Hutton. Carefully designed by renowned architects at Cox & Stevens in New York, her launch in 1931 marked a milestone as the world’s largest private sailing yacht. It was, by all means - a floating masterpiece. Now, the 110-meter yacht is going through a massive transformation, aiming to restore its original charm and majesty. After arriving in Malta in November 2025, the top-to-bottom overhaul was announced by Daniel Kũpfer, her current owner’s representative. Over the decades, Sea Cloud has worn many faces. Besides her illustrious start, she served as a weather ship during World War II, before becoming a presidential ship named ‘Angelita’. After a series of transitions, the splendid vessel, then experiencing a hardship at Panama, was rescued by a group of German entrepreneurs who brought it home and named it Sea Cloud once again. The ongoing refit represents more than pure aesthetics - it is an endeavor to restore Sea Cloud’s authenticity. Her impressive history deserves nothing less. This detailed reconstruction, inspired by historical documents and Sea Cloud’s original blueprints, brings back the grandeur whilst adhering to a meticulous craftsmanship. This period of rejuvenation also marks a significant shift in Sea Cloud’s function. Once the world’s most beautiful cruise ship, known for hosting 64 guests with a 60-person attentive crew, Sea Cloud will soon sail away from an extensive customer service era. The revamped yacht will house only 20 guests, reinstating the true vibe of this historic sailing vessel. It’s a move that prioritizes the intimate and classic sailing experience, attracting people who don’t just wish to sail but want to revel in the yacht’s breath-taking legacy. Breathing fresh air into a classic, the Sea Cloud is rising from the wake of time, her golden age still shimmering on the sea horizon. This isn’t just ship restoration, it’s a resurrection of an era.
