New Zealand's iconic Emirates Team secures the grand prize at the prestigious 2025 Barfoot & Thompson Yachting Excellence Awards.

Explosive cheers filled the air, as Emirates Team New Zealand secures the highest honour at the 2025 Barfoot & Thompson Yachting Excellence Awards. A monumentous occasion that adequately showcases the skill and proficiency of these expert yacht sailors. This excitement was further amplified by the introduction of the inaugural Peter Lester Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sailing, in honour of the dearly departed sailor, coach, and commentator. The coveted Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy, orbiting the world of top-tier sailing as the ‘Sailor of the Year’ award, was warmly received by the Emirates Team, saluting their spectacular third consecutive victory at the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Their victory against INEOS Britannia established an unprecedented three-peat tradition, affirming their status as one of the sailing industry’s most accomplished teams. Delegates Richard Meacham and Ray Davies bear pride and gratitude as they accepted the award on behalf of the team. The group, recently christened as World Sailing’s 2025 Team of the Year, now steers their focus toward defending the esteemed Auld Mug in Naples come 2027. Mark Mulcare, who holds an inspiring legacy as a former blind world champion, was presented with the first-ever Peter Lester Award, commemorating his finest contributions and over 20 years of service to keelboat and club racing. Yachting chief executive, Steve Armitage, discussed the human side of Lester’s legacy—an inspiration that branched from his technical brilliance to his unwavering commitment, honesty, and storytelling prowess. Other noteworthy accolades include Megan Thomson and her 2.0 Racing Team claiming the Female Sailor of the Year award, followed by wingfoiling sensation, Sean Herbert, receiving the Male Sailor of the Year award. Herbert’s stellar sailing season has certainly made waves in the sporting world, and this recognition is nothing short of well-deserved.
