Breaking New Waters: How the 18 Foot Skiff Academy is Charting a Successful Course for Women in Sailing

The Australian 18 Footers League is to be commended for breaking down barriers and opportunities in sailing. Stepping away from tradition, the League made the groundbreaking decision in 2023 to launch an Academy, aiming to inspire more women to plug into the then 131-year-old skiff class. The first graduates, Emma Rankin and Bec Hancock, have since set their sails high, and are riding on the waves of success with the League’s 2023-24 season fleet.

Rankin has carved her place in maritime history by becoming the maiden female skipper to clinch a victory in Race 2 of the NSW Championship. She prides herself on being a determined and skilled sportswoman rather than standing out on the strength of her gender. Both Rankin and Hancock have proven their talent, resolve, and dedication, cementing their standings as formidable contenders in a highly competitive field.

Before diving into the 18-footers, Rankin held an impressive track record, from being a national champion of NS14 in 2016 and 2017, the Australian Women’s Match Racing National Champion in 2018, Formula 16 Catamaran National Champion in 2022 and 2023 to bagging the Hobie 16 Women’s State and National Champion title in 2023. Despite her petite size and initial doubts, as she confessed in 2025, she never allowed any physical or mental hurdles to deter her objectives or cloud her determination.

Emma’s transition from a successful past to a prosperous present in sailing 18 foot skiffs was made possible by the Academy’s commitment to facilitate women’s inclusion and, of course, her prowess in the field. As per her words, “The League has been a big driver in getting women into class. Without them providing the opportunity to get involved, I wouldn’t be sailing an 18 today.” Emma’s story and her incredible success serves as a beacon of accomplishment, proving that the world of sailing is open to all. It’s indeed a soaring symbol of determination, hard work, and the power of opportunity.
