Learn from the Experts: Essential Strategies and Tips for the Round Britain & Ireland Race
What does it take to conquer the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Round Britain & Ireland Race, one of the world’s premier sailing competitions? A recent live webinar hosted by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) revealed insights from some of the sailing world’s finest authorities, imparting expertise gleaned from nine successful race campaigns. From understanding the importance of early preparation to managing crew resilience, these experts laid a road map for success. This hour-long masterclass, now available for everyone, offers invaluable wisdom for sailors, supporters, and prospective entrants.
Another critical voice in the coaching session was Pip Hare, the 2022 line honours winner aboard the impressive IMOCA 60 Medallia. She designated the race track as one of the finest offshore circuits globally and shared her method for success. A detailed ‘road book’ or passage plan is her secret weapon, outlining potential hazards, decision points, wind farms, oil rigs, traffic separation schemes, rocks, tides, and forecast sources. Effectively, a well-prepared crew reduces the number of critical decisions that need to be made, especially when conditions are tough, and the crew’s metal is tested.
RORC Commodore Deb Fish, an experienced winner of both fully crewed and double-handed categories, also shared her lessons. Reminding sailors never to underestimate the race’s latter stages, she drew attention to the fact that while the finish line may seem near, fatigue, tricky tides and unexpected hazards can turn a well-sailed competition into a disaster.
Will Naylor, preparing for his fifth Round Britain & Ireland Race with the British Army Sailing Association, drove home the crucial aspect of crew management and resilience. He advised not relying on one or two individuals for all navigation knowledge and encouraged teams to double up on skills, always thinking carefully about food, water, communications and spare reserves.
A race like the Round Britain & Ireland Race is not for the faint-hearted - it requires far more than basic endurance. The sea has always been a demanding master, but with an experienced panel of experts sharing vital strategies and tips, sailors have profound insights to aid them as they plan for the challenges ahead. Good luck to all those who dare to take the leap!
