Discover the Fascinating Journey of a Purser Defying Traditions and Assumptions

Published: 29 Sep 2025
Embarking on a journey usually avoided by many, a daring woman shares her experiences of moving from a shoreside professional to the indispensable role of a yacht purser.

Many consider a yacht’s purser to be merely a glorified steward or personal assistant. Or worse, some assume this role is relevant only for the most luxurious mega-yachts. It’s true that the purser’s role is one of the least understood on board, but it is also one of the most critical. A purser is not limited to booking flights or managing the yacht’s interiors. They are the essential link between the crew, management, and owners, navigating a unique professional space that does not conform to conventional hierarchies or departments.

Our heroine began her maritime journey on the shore, working in the sales department of a yacht company. Even back then, she was swimming against the tide in a male-dominated industry. When she realized that the industry was reluctant to advance a woman into a pure sales broking role, she took a leap of faith from shoreside to ship - a decision many around her questioned.

Her audacious transition paid off as she found herself soaking up a wealth of experience in her first purser role, managing crew and guest logistics, handling finances, handling paperwork for remote destinations, and overcoming challenges of life at sea. She navigated the tricky waters brought on by unprecedented events like Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her career took an exciting turn when she was inducted into a team during the final year of a yacht’s construction - a high-pressure phase where she was tasked with the onboarding of over 90 crew members.

Her unique journey from the shore to the ship and back to the shore again gave her rare insights and skills which are invaluable in the world of yachting. It is a tale of courage, resilience and the unending quest for professional growth, set against the backdrop of the vast and unpredictable seas.
