Projecting a 2035 Superyacht Boom: A Deep Dive into the Future of the Mediterranean’s Prime Cruising Territory
Imagine drawing an arc from Gocek in Turkey, through Sardinia, landing in Gibraltar. This arbitrary line outlines the Mediterranean’s prime cruising grounds, a sprawling expanse over 2,000 nautical miles. These waters, annually awash with thousands of superyachts, guests, and crew, form the backdrop to a lifestyle of adventure and luxury. However, with forecasts suggesting an additional 3,400 superyachts by 2035, these idyllic waters could soon face a tidal wave of infrastructure pressures and overpopulation.
Indeed, shipyard new builds and supply chains are relishing the potential advanced orders, but the infrastructure and service networks are far from celebrating. The looming influx of superyachts is set to strain the existing nautical support networks. Recognising the urgency of this issue, the Balearic Marine Cluster established the Mediterranean Superyacht Forum, a pioneering event aimed at strategic planning and readiness for the imminent challenges of the superyacht boom.
The solution lies in extensive planning and investment that strives for optimisation and readiness for the increasing existing demand and growing fleet. Regional superyacht associations across Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and beyond are feeling the pressure to educate stakeholders on the economic value of yachts and secure future prosperity.
This collaborative spirit displayed in the Mediterranean Superyacht Forum could potentially lead to a transformative shift in shaping the Mediterranean’s future. By successfully balancing growth with preservation, the Mediterranean ‘playground’ of superyachts can continue to flourish as a world-class gateway to life on the seas.
