Mazu Yachts Co-founder’s Tragic Loss: Legal Repercussions for Cargo Ship Captain and Crew

A profound ripple has been sent through the maritime world, as Turkish prosecutors announce a potential sentence of up to nine years for the captain and crew of the cargo ship, Arel 7. This comes in the aftermath of a tragic collision with esteemed yacht designer Halit Yukay, co-founder of Mazu Yachts, which shocked the marine community earlier this year.

Yukay was reported missing by his family on August 4th during a voyage to Mykonos from Yalova, Turkey. Despite tireless search and rescue efforts, Yukay’s body was subsequently discovered at a depth of 68 metres, 19 days later. Arel 7 Towering at 92 metres, the Arel 7 was implicated in the incident, leading to an intensive investigation by maritime authorities. The ship’s captain, Cemal Tokatlıoğlu, initially arrested in August, was charged with ‘causing death by negligence’. However, he was later released in October, pending future court action.
