Life on the sea can be an allegory for life itself. Embarking on a voyage implies bravery and a readiness to confront the unexpected with an unflinching spirit. Unfortunately, too many seafarers and aspiring sailors make excuses, stalling their own progress in the face of adventure and exploration.
On the surface, these excuses seem logical - ‘The sea is too unpredictable’, ‘The costs are too high’, or even, ‘I’ll probably get seasick’. But, go deeper down and you’ll find that these excuses barely hold water. Let’s unpack each.
‘The sea is unpredictable’ - correct, it is. However, is life on land all roses and sunshine, bereft of unpredictability and challenges? So, why should venturing out to sea be any different? Besides, it’s the unpredictability of the seas that offers excitement and discovery. And surely, isn’t that what sailing is all about?
