A riveting show of aquatic skill and strategy played out at the KZN Flying 15 Regionals at Henley Midmar Yacht Club in South Africa, as the newbies clinched the top spot.

In an intense race that had spectators on the edges of their seats, newcomers Thomas Funke and Colin Becker edged out veteran sailors in the South African KZN Flying 15 Regionals hosted at Henley Midmar Yacht Club on November 15 and 16. Braving cold and wet conditions, the pair claimed a hard-earned victory after a gruelling two days of racing.

A relatively new player to the sailing game, Funke, paired with Becker, raced with precision and strategy to clinch their inaugural regional title. The fleet consisted of eight notable yachts, each helmed by renowned names in the sailing world. Becker, who has recently been yachting on the big boat CFM, expressed his satisfaction at being part of such an invigorating event, commending Funke’s preparedness and tactical calls.

Relishing his victory, Funke expressed enthusiasm about what the win meant for him. ‘What an awesome way to finish a good sailing year. Five regionals, three Nationals, one African Championship, and one World Championship!’ Funke reflected. The wind conditions remained challenging throughout the race, with the breeze shifting more often than not, ensuring an interesting play of events. It was Funke and Becker’s consistent performance that ultimately determined their triumph, a testament to their skill and resilience.
