The inaugural Hobie Wave Grand Prix graced the shores of the Vincentia Sailing Club creating new waves in the sailing world. With 24 brave entrants hitting the water on 8 gleaming Hobie Waves, the competition was as fierce as the winds. The event’s format, a somewhat downscaled version of the world’s most gripping sailboat racing, opened doors for more sailing enthusiasts to taste the thrill of competitive racing.
In the run-up to this landmark weekend of sailing, enthusiasts and competitors alike were treated to balmy weather paired with a persistent nor’easterly sea breeze - an idyllic setting. Each participant came prepared, armed with a pre-set race schedule and eager anticipation. The contest was structured in rounds, with three heats per round, giving a chance for competitors to gauge and grapple with the competition.
The event saw tremendous support from sponsors and contributors, each one playing a key role in making the inaugural Wave GP happen. The vibrant local sponsors added charm to the affair, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
The first day of racing came alive under fair weather and favourable winds. Renowned sailors put their skills to test, racing the waves and leaving spectators spellbound. Faces like Rod Waterhouse, racing with his grandson Jackson, amplified the event’s awesomeness.
In the words of Hobie legend, Rod ‘Hot Rod’ Waterhouse, ‘racing the Hobie Wave is a humbling experience’. His words capture the essence of the inaugural event – an electrifying mix of challenge, thrill, and camaraderie that the Hobie Wave Grand Prix brought to the Vincentia Sailing Club.
