Race Around Australia 2028 Stirs Adrenalin; The Shorthanded Ocean Racing Association Calls for Interested Parties
Forty years after the exhilarating competition in 1988, the Race Around Australia is returning in 2028. Brought to fruition by the Shorthanded Ocean Racing Association of Australia, this race embraces the spirit of the Bicentennial race of ‘88. The uniquely doublehanded race will see participants face an exciting journey across more than 7,000 nautical miles, split into five legs with four stopovers. The promise of two sprint stages and two pit stops also await the racing teams.
Sir Peter Blake and Mike Quilter are sailing legends who emerged victorious in the 1988 Bicentennial Race, aboard the 60-foot trimaran Steinlager 1. Providing a seasoned perspective on the gruelling challenge, Quilter said, ‘It’s 7,000 miles, not a Sydney Hobart. It’s as much an adventure as it is a race… you’ve got to be self-sufficient, and you’re going to have a few problems.’
The Shorthanded Ocean Racing Association is committed to conducting the race with safety at its core. Safety measures are strict, including adherence to Australian Sailing’s Category 1 requirements, supplementary safety equipment, crew training, and a qualifying voyage.
Showcasing inclusivity in sailing, the race is open to monohull and multihull yachts ranging from 40 to 60 feet. Smaller, swift, seaworthy monohulls could also quality for the race. Racing will fall under IRC for monohulls and OMR for multihulls, alongside PHRF handicaps. The PredictWind Navigation Challenge will also be featured, with teams predicting their finishing times prior to the start of each leg.
Expressions of interest that fulfil the eligibility requirements will receive Provisional Entrant Status, accepting entries on a first come, first served basis. This thrilling maritime journey promises teams priority access to logistics and an opportunity to contribute to race planning. Harness the excitement and savour the adventure of a lifetime in the phenomenal Race Around Australia 2028.
