The Rolex Fastnet Race could see fierce competition in the IRC Three class, with an impressive array of smaller vessels set for exhilarating matchups.

With a notable variety of smaller and sometimes older vessels, the upcoming Rolex Fastnet Race presents an exciting arena for the IRC Three class. Its propensity for fierce competition has even crowned the overall winner in two of its last six renditions. This year promises to be no exception, rousing great anticipation among sailing enthusiasts worldwide.

In an awe-inspiring display of diversity, this edition will feature an impressive 93 boats across 29 different yacht designs. Participants range from small offshore raceboats, including Dehler 30 and Sun Fast 30 models, to larger vessels like the 50ft cutter Gemervescence and the vintage Nicholson 55, Quailo III.

Competitors face not only each other, but also the unpredictable sea. Past incidents include an unexpected liferaft inflation that led to Quailo III bowing out prematurely.

Embracing the challenge are seasoned sailors Sam White and Sam North, who command the JPK1080 ‘Mzungu!’. Their string of podium finishes in RORC races has established them as strong competitors to watch. With tides and topography posing additional strategic challenges, every place earned in the Fastnet Race is a hard-fought victory.

Adding an international flavor, Gérard Quenot and Luc Fourichon’s La Rochelle-based JPK 1030 Blue Skies will compete in their fifth Fastnet race. Both are noted figures in French sailing, contributing to Fastnet’s reputation as a global event.

The anticipation for the IRC Three faceoff at the Rolex Fastnet Race promises to deliver a thrilling experience for both participants and spectators. The uncertainty of outcomes, defined not only by boat design but also by strategic choices and unpredictable elements, forms the essence of its allure.
