The maritime world eagerly anticipates the 2026 Etchells West Coast Spring Series, featuring top-notch sailing teams competing in San Diego.

In 2026, one of the most esteemed sailing events, the Etchells West Coast Spring Series (WCSS), sails into the San Diego Yacht Club. Featuring one of San Diego’s most active and competitive fleets, the Club gleefully anticipates hosting 40 Etchells teams for the first regatta - the Etchells Bill Bennett Cup. Participants will map their course towards polished racing skills over the four-month series, setting their sights on the Etchells Worlds, slated to be held this May at San Diego Yacht Club. Melanie Aalbers, the WCSS Event Chair, bubbles with excitement at welcoming the top-class competitors, acknowledging the rising momentum as the Worlds draw closer.

Jeff Johnson, SDYC’s Waterfront Director, shares insights on the racecourse and the typical conditions. The regattas will take place in the Pacific Ocean, flanking the long sandy beaches of Coronado. The weather brings a new layer of thrills, amplified by the seashore’s changing dynamics. By May, the winds lie tamed as reliable SW-W winds in the 8-12 knot range paint the sky, welcoming racers to compete under mild, sunny conditions.

As the yacht club readies herself for the first regatta, the Bill Bennett Cup, competitors from across the globe, including Australia, Bermuda, and across the States, chart their journey to Southern California. The maritime world holds its breath as the stage is set for this prestigious event.
