The 2025 Squib Nationals Take Off at Torbay - Brace Yourselves for Ups, Downs, and Wins!
The buzz of anticipation filled the air as 46 Squibs launched on Day 1 of the Squib National Championship 2025, hosted by the prestigious Royal Torbay Yacht Club. The first day’s racing kicked off with a Practice Race, followed by a tense Points Race, setting the thrilling stage of what’s to come.
Competing in challenging conditions with cunning wind shifts of up to 40 degrees and erratic wind strength varying from 6 to 16 knots, the navigational prowess was put to the test. During the one-lap Practice Race, Richard Smith and Graham Reeve sealed the first victory with ‘Flame’, followed closely by ‘Cariad Bach’ helmed by Nick Whipp and James Budd. Rounding out the top trio was ‘Atlanta’, skippered by Nick Milton and Gavin Kemp.
Jack Grogan and Mike Banks sailing via ‘Budgies Tongue’ took an early lead at the windward mark, closely trailed by Nick Whipp. Last year’s champions, Micky Wright and Alex Porteous, sailing ‘Spoof’ from RCYC held their positions at fifth. Despite a near-capsize scare, ‘Budgies Tongue’ held on to win the four-lap race.
As the fleet adjusts and strategizes against the unpredictable conditions, one must stay tuned for more dramatic turns and unexpected victories at the Squib National Championship 2025.
