Day two of the 2025 Star World Championship witnessed a monumental on-water chess match, a display of tactical sailing in full swing.

In the sultry Adriatic off Split, Croatia, the second day of the exhilarating 2025 Star World Championship saw 101 boats bravely navigate the azure waters. After a 90-minute land-bound anticipation, racers found themselves amidst an unpredictable, yet thrilling forecast. Chancing it, the Race Committee set sail at 12.30pm, an ambitious gamble that resulted in fortuitous wind conditions. With an imposing easterly wind of 12 knots sweeping across the racecourse, the participants started their race under splendid conditions. The award-winning Vakaros RaceSense system was relied on for ensuring fair and accurate starts, successfully preventing any general recall incidents.

Retaining their position on top, Kusznierewicz and Prada displayed immense skill and control during the first downwind, with Buckingham/Nichol and the German Silver Star duo applying intense pressure. The second upwind leg was marked by further tactical reshuffles, revealing Merkelbach and Koy’s ability to read wind shifts best, putting them in a winning position, followed by Kusznierewicz-Prada and the Italian World Champions Negri with Lambertenghi that charted the middle of the course to perfection.

It was the Italians, however, who smoothly sailed into the lead during the final downwind leg, crossing the finish line first, followed by the Merkelbach/Koy and Kusznierewicz-Prada respectively.

Negri and Lambertenghi currently hold the overall lead after two races. With a forecast hinting at stronger southerly breezes that could bring challenging weather conditions, stakes for the third race are escalated. Nevertheless, as each team prepares to conquer whatever the Adriatic winds may bring, sailing enthusiasts worldwide are awaiting the thrilling next chapter of this championship at the edge of their seats.
