The 80th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race celebrates a legacy of courage, endurance, and remarkable human achievement.

Marking its 80th edition, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a testimony to human endurance, resilience and a proud milestone in sailing history. Since it first began in 1945, it has surpassed being just a sailing event to become a global icon imprinted in maritime and sporting history.

Rolex, the title sponsor since 2002, has forged a cornerstone partnership with the race organizer, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. This partnership is part of the Swiss watchmaker’s near 70-year proactive involvement with yachting.

The 2025 race boasts a lineup of over 130 yachts, including the world’s leading maxi yachts and former race winners, creating one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated events this century. The race continues to draw international sailing talent to its irresistible appeal.

The story of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race started from a humble invitation to a cruise to Hobart in 1945. A simple response from British Navy Captain John Illingworth, ‘I will, if you make a race of it,’ triggered a tradition that’s lived on for 80 years.
