Fair, Safe, and Fun: The Game Plan for 2026 ILCA Oceania Solidarity Squad's Virile Racing Adventure
The thrilling spectacle that is the 2026 International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Oceania Solidarity Squad sailing event is about to get underway. Shade from New Zealand to Australia, seafaring enthusiasts find themselves gathered in Hobart. Engrossed in a myriad of activities, the first day of the Championship brought both supporters and the squad to a welcome session with the event organisers and sponsors.
The extended event will test the prowess, grit, and determination of the sailors involved. “The aim is to ensure my on-water teams give you the best sailing experience you can get on the water,” exclaimed Principal Race Officer, Colin Dods. Fairness, safety, and fun mark the three key deliverables sought from the championship.
“Our main aim was to run a program for young women,” explained Australian ILCA Chairman, Ken Hurling, OAM, describing the genesis of the Solidarity Program, which took flight in 2023 after procuring a grant from ILCA.
In a poignant moment, Jo and Nick Ogden, owners of the principal sponsor, Performance Sailcraft, highlighted the equal opportunity afforded by the identical ILCA dinghies, designed 55 years ago by two Canadian guys, Ian Bruce and Bruce Kirby. These boats are identical to the one gold-medalist Ben Ainslie sailed in during Sydney 2000 Olympics. Here, competition meets camaraderie, with an aspiration for each participant to elevate their skills, band together as a team, and aim for the Olympics.
With Australian Sailing Coach Indy Cooper providing advice on-water and shore during the championship, the 2026 ILCA Oceania Solidarity Squad is prepared to conquer, make lifelong friends, and share their love for sailing. The event promises to be one of the most exciting fixtures in the sailing calendar, with the anticipation building for a splendid showcase of skill and sportsmanship.
